The majority of them are Azov dolphins, a relatively smaller ones, but the Black Sea bottle-nose (Aphalina) dolphins are found as well. Both kinds are represented in the Black Sea only. Crimean scientists state that this phenomenon is quite wide-spread and it threatens the existence of the marine mammals. This was the topic of our conversation with Oleksii BIRKUN, famous Crimean biologist, chairman of the International NGO Black Sea Council for Marine Mammals and the Scientific Committee for the International Convention “Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Black Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and Contiguous Atlantic Area (ACCOBAMS).”
